Question 4
Please choose one of the following prompts and respond to it in no less than 300-400 words. In your response, you must fully answer all aspects of the question and support your answer with reference to course materials (textbook, supplementary readings, videos, etc.).
· Almost every type of society that has ever existed has been marked by some form(s) of social inequality. Why do you think this is the case? Do you think social inequality can be avoided by or removed from societies? If so, how? If not, why not? And what do you think your favorite sociological theory/theorist would have to say about these questions?
· Sometimes, the differences between social forms around the world have been framed as differences in levels of “development” or “progress” – which assumes that the closer a society gets to our own “post-industrial” model, the better it is. Sociology, however, as you have now seen, does not make these assumptions. Now that you have learned about many different types of societies, compare and contrast one of your choosing with the post-industrial society of the United States. What are their differences? In what way do these differences matter for the people who live in these societies? And do they have anything in common?
Question 5
Please choose one of the following prompts and respond to it in no less than 300-400 words. In your response, you must fully answer all aspects of the question and support your answer with reference to course materials (textbook, supplementary readings, videos, etc).
· Consider Weber’s distinction between authority and power. Which does he think is more effective and stable, and why? Who holds authority and power in your society (and in your life), and why do you think, using Weber’s theory, they are able to maintain this position over you and others?
· Many people believe that a society without power is not possible. Take the opposite position. If we were to assume that a society without power is possible, how might it work? Would it still need authority? If so, why? If not, why not?
